Multi-split air conditioning: several rooms, one outdoor unit?

Cooling several rooms with multi-split air conditioning? Read about zone controls, simultaneous use and expansion. Ask Wattra for a room-by-room proposal.

Indoor air conditioning unit in a living room

In brief

A multi-split air conditioning connects multiple indoor units with one outdoor unit. This can fit when you want to bring different rooms to temperature separately. The number of connected units and possible combinations depend on the chosen system. One external unit does not mean that all internal units deliver unlimited maximum power at the same time under all conditions. Let the desired rooms design as one installation.

This explanation is part of air conditioning & heat pumps.

Setting up separately is not the same as being able to do everything at once

Daikin describes multi-split systems in which each internal unit has its own temperature setting, but heating and cooling are not possible simultaneously. Also check that limitation for the model offered. A sunny desk and a cool bedroom can have different wishes at the same time. Therefore, distinguish between your own room temperature and a completely independent heating or cooling mode. This avoids expectations that the chosen combination cannot fill in.

What spaces do you use at the same time?

Make a list of the living room, bedrooms, desk and any guest room. Write next to each room when used and if the door is usually closed. Think of a working day, a warm evening and a weekend with visitors. Ask what the proposal provides when multiple rooms simultaneously require comfort and when only one small room is running. The sum of room names is not yet a support for any particular outside unit.

Compare the routes as well

One external unit does not render the pipework to each inner unit unnecessary. Ask for a route on the plan and discuss where drainage, transit and visible gutters come. A set-up with short, feasible routes may differ from a choice of devices based only on the available façade space. Let us explain why one multisplit or several separate systems is proposed in your layout, with the same rooms and work as a starting point.

Can we get a room later?

Sometimes a system can be expanded, but not only reserve that possibility with the words "later expandable'. Ask how many connections remain available, which device combinations are allowed and what preparation is now useful. A future unit must also fit capacity, pipeline and operation. Capture what is being placed today and what would be a separate later assignment. Preparation is not a commitment that any future model will remain compatible.

Let Wattra work out a room layout

Provide a ground plan with the desired zones, the simultaneous use and any expansion plans. Add photos of possible outings and your municipality. Ask to name the interior unit, operation and route per room, plus the starting points for the combined power. Wattra discusses multisplit-air placement in Flanders. You do not have to choose a brand or number of kilowatts; a clear description of the rooms is the most useful starting point.
