Inverter cuts out in sunshine: a fault or a grid problem?

Inverter cutting out in sunny weather? Learn why this does not necessarily mean a defect and how to gather information safely for investigation.

An inverter with its cover closed in a utility room

In brief

An inverter that shuts down in strong sunshine is not necessarily faulty. According to Fluvius, excessive voltage can cause a temporary protective shutdown. The installation inside the property must also be assessed. The time of the shutdown alone does not establish its cause. Record fault messages and interruption times, and have the problem investigated. Buying a new inverter or changing protection settings is not the first step.

Make the recurring pattern visible

Save production screenshots and notifications for a few concrete moments. Write down when the failure starts, how long it takes and whether the data will change again afterwards. Indicate whether other devices work differently at the same time, without taking measurements themselves. Also describe whether it is a single inverter or multiple devices. A brief overview of dates is often more useful for preparation than a general report that it misses every sunny day.

What does the Fluvius network checker say?

The Fluvius network checker provides an estimate of the risk of failure due to voltage problems. An increased risk does not prove that your inverter is really falling out; a low risk is also a guarantee that this never happens. Save the outcome along with your own notifications and graphs. Use this information as a background for your service request, not as a technical inspection report. A specific error in your installation cannot be ruled out just by looking at the situation nearby.

When do you involve the distribution system operator?

Let us first assess whether a problem is involved in your indoor installation. Fluvius requests contact via 078 35 35 00 in the event of continued failure. Keep the settings, timings and information about your installation at hand. Decide with the parties concerned who will take what follow-up step. A notification to Wattra is not automatically a notification to Fluvius. Any fees have their own terms and conditions; please refer to the current information of the distribution system operator and do not count on a payout in advance.

Let the cause determine the procedure

Do not change limit values or other security settings to prevent failure. Do not open appliances or distribution boards, and do not carry out electrical tests. Wattra discusses the diagnosis and any work on your existing installation; work on the public network is not part of an ordinary repair job. Ask what was technically established, which procedure is proposed and how the action is subsequently followed. A proposal for a battery or other inverter also requires a separate justification and your agreement.

Why does my inverter fall out especially around noon?

A connection to sunny hours may indicate a tension problem, but does not prove the cause. Write down error codes and times and have the private installation evaluated first. Fluvius deals with breakdowns associated with the distribution network through its own reporting procedure. Replacing a battery or inverter is not automatically the solution. Do not change safety or voltage limits to prevent shutdown.
