When electric underfloor heating is useful
Electric floor heating consists of heating cables or mats that are just below your floor finish and work directly on electricity. No pipes, no boiler, no collector: only a cable, a thermostat and a correctly constructed circuit. This makes the system thin, quickly placed and ideal in places where CV floor heating is not practical or not affordable.
The strongest applications:
- The bathroom: a warm tile floor at the time you shower, often combined with a towel radiator or infrared panel. See also electric heating in the bathroom.
- A small renovation: one room that is tiled again, such as a kitchen, toilet or entrance hall. The mats are in the adhesive layer, so the surface height remains limited.
- Comfort heating: not intended to fully heat the space, but to make the floor comfortable next to the main heating.
Where you better think twice: as main heating of large areas. Underfloor heating works per square meter, so the installed power and consumption grow directly proportional to the space. A bathroom floor of four square meters is a different story than a living room of forty.
Mats or cables: the difference on main lines
Both systems do the same, the difference is in the placement. Heating mats are cables already woven on a net, with a fixed distance between the loops. You roll them out over the floor and tile them: fast, predictable and ideal for rectangular spaces with limited height. Separate heating cables Explain your loop by loop yourself. This requires more work, but you can vary the distance between loops and work smoothly around obstacles: convenient in a bathroom full of corners, around a walk-in shower or in a room with a strange shape. Cables are sometimes a bit deeper in a filling layer or screed, so the floor reacts slower but the heat spreads more evenly.
Thermostat and control: here's the profit
An electric floor without good thermostat is a sneak consumer. The control is done with a thermostat with a floor sensor, which measures the temperature of the floor itself instead of just the air. This also protects the floor finish against overheating. With a programmable or smart thermostat, you only let the floor warm up when it's useful: in the morning in the bathroom, in the evening in the kitchen.
Rule of thumb: an electric floor that is switched on around the clock is misset. Well programmed, he works a few hours a day, just when you're here.
Smart control can follow more than clocks: warm up when you produce solar panels or when you dynamic energy contract inexpensive, and don't hit it when your oven and dryer are already running. That last one keeps your quarter-hour peak demand and so it capacity tariff Under control.
Connection to its own circle and cooperation with the floor deck
Electric floor heating should be on its own, properly dimensioned circuit with the right security, especially in a bathroom. The power is rapidly rising from space to above what a shared circuit can handle, and the device rotates for hours. Wattra puts that circle from the board, places the thermostat with floor sensor and works everything AREI-compliant.

Is electric underfloor heating expensive in consumption?
Consumption is power times hours: a bathroom floor with limited power working two hours a day remains modest, a large area that is not on around the clock. Therefore electric floor heating is especially strong as comfort heating in small areas with good thermostat, and rarely as main heating of a large, moderately isolated space.
How fast does an electric floor get warm?
Matts that lie just below the tiles in the glue layer, you usually feel within half an hour to hour. Cables that sit deeper in a screed react slower but hold the heat longer. With a programmable thermostat, you just let the floor heat up in advance, so it's warm when you step into the bathroom.
Can electric floor heating be under any floor?
Tiles and natural stone are ideal: they conduct heat well and tolerate them effortlessly. Under laminate, parquet or vinyl it is often possible, but with a system and a maximum temperature that allows the manufacturer of the floor. The thermostat's floor sensor is guarding that boundary. We always tune this with your floorer.
Does electric floor heating need a separate circuit?
Yeah, that's the right approach. Underfloor heating attracts hours at a piece of power and therefore belongs on its own circle with custom fuse and security, especially in the bathroom. Thus the installation AREI-compliant and you can get through the inspection without discussion.
What if later a cable breaks under the floor?
A break is usually due to drilling or damage during work, rarely wear and tear. That's why we measure the cables before, during and after the placement of the floor and document the values. If something breaks later, a specialist can locate the fracture and fix it locally, without opening the entire floor.
