Shelly behind your switch: will it always fit?

Making existing lighting smart with Shelly? Check the neutral wire, installation space, lamp and module together before ordering.

The short answer

Not every Shelly module suits every switch or lamp. Existing wiring, electrical load and available space determine which solution is possible.

Switching and dimming are different jobs

Do you only want to switch a light, or dim it too? A switching module does not make a non-dimmable lamp dimmable. Note lamp and driver references and mention multiple control points. Request a proposal for the complete lighting point, not just the cheapest individual module.

No neutral wire requires a specific choice

Shelly states that most devices need a neutral wire, with exceptions for certain models. This does not provide a universal solution for every existing installation. Have a qualified person assess space, connection requirements and any additional components. Do not open a switch yourself to identify uncertain wiring.

Keep ordinary controls intuitive

Discuss what the wall button should do and how people without the app will control the light. Tell Wattra which rooms and functions you need. A focused trial can help before modifying the whole home. Request instructions on controls and access at handover, without entering passwords in a contact form.

What you can prepare now

  • Lamp and driver references, if visible.
  • Switching or dimming, and existing control points.

Frequently asked questions

Does every Shelly need a neutral wire?

No, but exceptions are model-specific. Have the complete combination checked.

Can I smart-dim any LED lamp?

No. The lamp, driver, dimming module and load must be compatible.
